Durham Academy Play Review

A couple months ago, Chamber Theatre Productions came to our school to perform in their last ever show. The 7th and 8th graders saw the first two performances, and the 5th and 6th graders saw the last couple during C period.

Their first performance, ‘The Monkey’s Paw’, was a story about a monkey’s paw that you could wish on. One of the characters gave to a couple who had a son, and the couple wished for a glut of money. They got the money, but they lost their son. They soon attempted to bring back their son, but he came out of his grave as a skeleton. Every time they wished for something plentiful, something unfortunate would happen as well.

The last performance was called ‘The Necklace’, a story about the same characters. This time, the wife wanted a necklace to go to a party. Everybody there at the party was extremely wealthy. The wife, sadly, wasn’t as wealthy. To disguise herself as looking rich, she rented a (very) expensive necklace along with a dress. The party was wonderful, SHE looked wonderful, everything had gone to plan, until she lost the necklace. She used the remaining money to buy an identical necklace in her attempt to fool the jeweler into thinking she returned the necklace.

Unfortunately, the jeweler wasn’t convinced. She had lost two bucketloads of money in order to make herself look beautiful for a party, and in the end, cost the family, and they weren’t able to afford their house nor the abundance of food they were eating.

I really loved the play; it was wonderful and it was really entertaining. It also taught incredibly valuable lessons. It was worth spending all of C period.

Thank you and good luck to those who performed!
